My theory was correct.
After re-reading Philo's review of LEGO batteries, I noticed that it is VERY EASY to remove the overcurrent protection of the old 9V 6xAA battery case (2847c01) and since it's not a permanent modification, I decided to try it.

No videos yet but with the same 6x Energizer Ultimate Lithium "My Little Tank" can now climb 50º slopes (and also steps smaller than 12 cm) again with the SBrick never disconnecting.

A minha teoria estava correcta: as pilhas Energizer Ultimate Lithium fornecem uma tensão significativamente maior que a PF LiPo (cerca de 2V mais) que faz com que a corrente dos dois motores XL ultrapasse o limite do circuito de proteção da caixa de pilhas PF 8881. Não é uma tensão muito maior que a de pilhas Alcalinas normais (cerca de 0.6 apenas) mas devido à menor resistẽncia interna as Ultimate Lithium acabam fornecendo muito mais corrente que as alcalinas e até mesmo que a PF Lipo (8878), suficiente para activar a proteção.

Depois de andar a reler o site do Philo, descobri que é muito fácil remover a proteção nas caixas antigas (2847c01) e sem causar nenhuma alteração permanente por isso decidi tentar. E confirma-se, o My Little Tank consegue novamente subir rampas de 50º e degraus inferiores a 12 cm sem nunca cair a ligação ao SBrick.

I think they are both the same, according to Bricklink one code is the part number and the other code is the set number but is strange when a set has only one part.

I think that when you have the PF IR it is powered by the 0 and 9V lines, not the C1 and C2, so it ignores the cursor position.
But if you connect the motors directly to the 8878, while you turn the cursor from far left to far right the motors should slow down, stop, then reverse and speed up in the opposite direction because the motors are electrical connected to C1 and C2 lines, which are controlled by the cursor.
